Married Gladys Anderson of Polk County, NE in 1940 in Osceola, NE. 2 children were born to this union, Janet (Barnes) and John Styskal. Gilbert joined the Navy when he was 17 years old during World War II. In 1943 he was on board the USS Belleau Wood air craft Carrier. On Oct. 30, 1944 it was hit by a Japanese suicide plane and set fire. Gilbert was not on the side the carrier that was on fire, 92 crewmen were killed or missing. He came back home for 2 months following that event. He then went on the aircraft the Ray K. Edwards, the Samaritan San Martin and the Coral Sea. He retired from the Navy in 1946 and received Honorable Merit for his service in the Navy.
