Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 7, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private and Musician in Company F on August 26, 1861. He then served through the balance of the conflict, re-enlisting on February 18, 1864. When the major of the 6th New Jersey's veterans' enlistment expired in the Summer of 1864, the remaining re-enlistees and recruits were transferred to the 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Private Farner was assigned to Company G, served through to the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865.
