GREENWOOD REMEMBERS
Benjamin (Ben) Adkinson (1890-1978)

Benjamin Adkison/Adkinson (Note: the family used both spellings over time) was born April 15, 1890, in Missouri the son of Charles Adkison (1848-1931) and Missouri E (nee Collins) Adkison (1850-1936). He had two older brothers, Gene Adkison (1871-1946) and Jess Adkison (1885-1950).

On December 23, 1915, Benjamin married Marqurite Morrow. Margurite would later use the name Margaret and the nickname Maggie. Benjamin would later use the name Ben or Benny. Ben and Margaret had one daughter, Frances M. Adkinson, born August 15, 1918.

In the 1920, 1930, and 1940 Censuses Ben's occupation was shown as farmer. The farm was likely in Pike County near Ramsey Creek since most of his family is buried in the Ramsey Creek Cemetery. By 1950 Ben and Margaret had moved to Annada, Missouri, and his occupation was shown as mail carrier and school janitor.

Prior to April 27,1963, all mail received in Annada was by train and a "mail messenger" carried the mail to and from the post office and train depot using a wheelbarrow. Ben Adkinson served in the position of "mail messenger" for 14 years until the service was discontinued in 1963.

In the 1950's and up until April 27, 1963, the young kids in Annada frequently "helped" Ben with his duties. We would gather at the train depot in the evening and keep him company. We would wait for the train's postal people to snatch the outgoing mail from a post and throw the incoming mail off from the train. Then we would run and get the mail bag and take it to Ben.

I'm not sure how much "help" to Ben we were, but we enjoyed talking to him and putting pennies on the train track as we waited for the train to smash them. Ben was quiet and soft spoken, fun to be around, and tolerated our "help" in a kind and gracious manner. I always remember him constantly chewing on a toothpick.

The trains gradually transitioned from steam locomotives to diesel. The job of "mail messenger" went away. The Post Office went away. I miss the steam locomotives, the Post Office, and I miss Ben. Ben passed away on January 1, 1978, and he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery beside his wife, Margaret, who had passed eight years earlier.
