Jane Broomfield of Kensington, MD, formerly a long time resident of Birmingham and Lake Orion, passed away on March 21, 2013 of heart disease. Beloved wife of Honorable William S. (Bill) Broomfield, for 62 years. Loving mother of Nancy (Casey) Aiken of Potomac, MD, Barbara (Stephen) Shaffer of North Bethesda, MD, and Patricia Thompson of Wheaton, IL. Devoted grandmother of Case Aiken of New York City, NY, Christina Aiken of Potomac, MD, Stephen Shaffer of Bethesda, MD and Lindsay Shaffer of North Bethesda, MD. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was the daughter of the late John and Mildred Smith and sister of the late Kendrick (Bunny) Smith all of Los Angeles, CA. She was raised in Oak Park, IL and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School, and earned a business degree from the Bryant and Stratton Business School in Chicago, Il. In 1951 she married Bill Broomfield and moved to Royal Oak, MI. His political career moved them to the Washington, DC area when he was elected to Congress in 1956. Her husband's career in politics, and on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, allowed them to travel the world. They were among the third U.S. delegation to visit China in 1974, which had been a childhood dream of hers. Hobbies included needlepoint, bridge, decorating, and reading. She was an active member of the Capitol Hill Club and the Congressional (Wives) Club both in Washington, DC. Private services will be held at the Modetz Funeral Home, Orion on Wednesday April 3, 2013. Interment White Chapel Cemetery, Troy. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a donation would be appreciated for the Leadership Center at the Rochester Hills Museum, 1005 Van Hoosen Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48306.
