BUSINESS CLOSED TO HONOR FRED DAWSON
Stillwater business houses closed at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in honor of the late Fred B. Dawson, whose funeral services then were being held under the auspices of the American Legion. His was the last body of an overseas hero from Payne county to be brought back from France, and the disposition was to make the funeral a memorial occasion for all the soldiers of the county who fell on foreign soil.
The funeral was held at the Christian church. Rev. S.G. Rogers, chaplain of Carter C. Hanner post, American Legion, conducted it, and a large number of veterans of the world war and sailors attended in uniform. The college band led the procession, and the R.O.T.C. of the college attended in a body. Interment was in Fair Lawn cemetery, where the usual ritual services were held, with a firing squad and taps.
Fred B. Dawson was born in Hariel county, Kansas, March 4, 1889; moved to Payne county in 1909; left Stillwater for Camp Travis April 26, 1918, and went to France as a private in Company E, 357th Infantry, 90th Division.
