Arch Lowe Jr., M.D., 89, Springfield, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2006, in his home. He was born August 7, 1917, in Springfield, the son of Horace Arch Sr. and Pearl Lines Lowe. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School. He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he was a walk-on football player. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia and from St. Louis University Medical School. Dr. Lowe was united in marriage to Alice Hamlin on December 26, 1936, during his first year of medical school. He served in England during World War II in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and achieved the rank of Captain. After completing his Residency Training, they returned to Springfield in 1949 where Dr. Lowe joined practice with his father, and was later joined by Dr. Peter H'Doubler. Dr. Lowe was a member of the American College of Surgeons, Hickory Hills Country Club, a past member of the University of Missouri Athletic Committee, was a Mason and a member of Abou Ben Adhem Shrine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Lowe, who died August 28, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Lucinda Lurvey and her husband, Steve, and Melissa Lowe; a brother, James E. Lowe; a brother-in-law, Jack Hamlin and his wife, Sis; three grandchildren and their spouses: Arch W. Jr. and Tina Watson, Melissa and Ricardo Flores, and Neil and Tina Lurvey; and three great-grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 19, 2006, in South Street Christian Church with the Reverend George Latimer officiating, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Maple Park Cemetery. No formal visitation is planned, however friends may call after 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society, 3161 W. Norton Rd., Springfield, MO 65803; or the Kipper Smart Memorial Fund, c/o Springfield Public Schools Foundation, 940 N. Jefferson Ave., Springfield, MO 65802.
