Ralph was born on September 10, 1942, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to the late Monroe and Johnsie Alston. Born the second of seven children, Tommy attended the public schools in Greensboro, graduating from James B. Dudley High in 1960.

At an early age, he joined Celia Phelps Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was active in the Sunday School and other church programs. He was a very friendly person who never met a stranger. He loved people and he was loved by all those who knew him.

He retired from Carolina Steel Corporation after 26 years of service. During his lifetime, he enjoyed sports, especially basketball and football. Tommy was married to the former Beverly Smith and to that union three children were born; later, he married the former Edith Lindsey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Johnsie Alston, and his step-daughter, Melissa Lindsey-Stukes.

Cherished memories are left with his children, Timothy (Shirlene) of Reidsville, N.C., Sherry Lynn of Greensboro, and Daryl Alston (Michelle) of Stokes, N.C.; two grandsons, Daryl Jr. and Dathon Alston; five brothers, Monroe Jr. (Rudene), Robert (Marie), Michael, Ronald (Elaine) and Anthony Alston, all of Greensboro; and one sister, Patricia A. Posey (Jerry); two aunts, Mrs. Annie B.
