Obituary: Joseph C. Backhaus, 83, of Rt. 2, Two Rivers, died Thursday evening (Nov. 24, 1977) at his residence.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Silver Lake. The Rev. Julian Resch will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Backhaus was born Nov. 13, 1894, in Mishicot, son of the late John and Katherine Espen Backhaus. He married Ida Neumeyer Oct. 30, 1917 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Silver Lake. She preceded him in death Dec. 19, 1946. He then married Elvira Wedekind June 11, 1949. The couple resided in Kelly Lake, Wis. for 13 years, returning to Manitowoc County in 1963. Mrs. Backhaus preceded him in death in January 1971. As a young man Mr. Backhaus taught school in the Larrabee area and later was engaged in farming until 1950. He was a 50 year member of Catholic Knights, the first president of St. Joseph Holy Name Society, Silver Lake; the secretary of Silver Lake Telephone Co. for many years and a past secretary of St. Joseph Church.

Survivors include five sons, Robert Backus(sic) of rural Manitowoc, Raymond Backus(sic) of Manitowoc, Allen Backus(sic) of rural Manitowoc, Paul Backus(sic)of rural Manitowoc and James Backus(sic) of Kaukauna; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Henry Miller of Sheboygan, Alice and Paul Eisner of rural Manitowoc, Ruth and Roland Spatchek of Brillion and a daughter Mrs. Charlotte Ebenhow of Kellnersville; a step-son, Ralph Wedekind of rural Manitowoc; two step-daughters, Mrs. Paul (Ethel) Backus(sic) of rural Manitowoc and Mrs. Carol Holt Zipperer of Green Bay; a brother, Charles Backus(sic) of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Amanda) Bauer of rural Manitowoc, 69 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Friends may call in Pfeffer Funeral Home 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m.
