William Wallace Turnbull, the founder of Saint John, New Brunswick's Turnbull Home, was a native of Nova Scotia of Scottish descent "...who came to Saint John as a youth of 19 and became a successful merchant. In New Brunswick he married Julia Catherine Hatheway of Maugerville, N.B. a descendant of Pennsylvania Loyalists." (See Turnbull, William Wallace CB at the Saint John Regional Library) One of their children was William Wallace Turrnbull, the inventor of the variable-pitch aeroplane propeller. There is an excellent biography of William Wallce Turnbull, the father, written by Elizabeth McGahan, in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online. On his headstone, beneath the dates of his birth and death, it is written: "THE MEMORY OF THE JUST IS BLESSED."
