Business Magnate. He learned to be a cabinet maker but never followed the occupation. He chose to join his brother Aaron in the lumber business. He then rented a forge in Annville, where he learned to manufacture malleable iron. In 1845 he sold the business interests and opened an iron store in Philadelphia. He then moved to Bridgeport, where he returned to the lumber business. He later purchased a large farm in Whitemarsh township, and for seven years engaged in agriculture. He was married to Mary Thomas Wood Lukens. In 1858 he entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, Alan Wood, under the name Alan Wood & Company in Conshohocken. Lukens remained a partner until 1877, when he sold his interest to his sons, Charles and Jawood Lukens, and retired. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends at Plymouth Meeting. He served three years as burgess of Conshohocken. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Conshohocken for seventeen years, and its president for four years. One of his daughters, Clara, married journalist and comic writer, Charles Heber Clark.
