Born on June 18, 1930, in Greenville, she was the daughter of Hamilton and Eleanor Jones, graduated from Greenville High and attended Furman University.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her children and their spouses, Leslie Armstrong and Alan Berger, Skip and Carol Armstrong, Mimi and Kenny Wiland, and Shadie and Tad Barber; grandchildren, Lyndsay Gianoli, Jessica Gramkow, Marie Katherine Armstrong, Kenneth Wiland, Shadie Wiland, Townsend Barber, and James Barber; stepchildren and their spouses, Jesse and Carolyn Tate, Vicky and JP McGuire, and Catherine Tate; stepgrandchildren, Rebecca Harp, Leslie Tate, Hannah Tate, John McGuire, and Matthew McGuire; and a brother, Hamilton Jones. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Eugene S. Armstrong.
Mrs. Tate was a life-long active member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was also a volunteer for several organizations, including the Carolina Ballet Theatre, Greenville Little Theatre, and the SC Dental Association Ladies' Auxiliary, for which she served as president; a member of the Carolina Debutante Club; and several bridge clubs.
Visitation will be held April 22, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home, 209 Riverbend Condominiums. Services will be held April 23, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery.
