54th Pittsburgh Mayor. He served as Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1970 to 1977 when he resigned to become a United States Deputy Attorney General in President Jimmy Carter's administration. Although he was a Democrat, he was a maverick mayor who ran under the slogan "Nobody's Boy" and distanced himself from the powerful Pittsburgh Democratic party that had ruled the city since the Great Depression. Born the son of Irish Catholic immigrants, he entered the Army Air Corps in the midst of World War II after graduating from high school. After serving as a navigator in the Pacific through the end of the war, he returned home and attended Mount Mercy College and then Notre Dame Law School, graduating with his J.D. in 1951. In 1973 and 1978, he was a candidate for the Pennsylvania governor seat but lost to the Republican candidate. In 1980 he was a candidate for the United States Senate yet lost to the Republican candidate. Later in 1983, he served 12 years as Allegheny County commissioner before retirement. He died from the complications of cancer.
