Martin L. Aaserud died of cancer Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at his home in Fargo, under the care of Hospice and his family.

He was born on September 1, 1927 in Cooperstown, ND to Otto and Martha (Lima) Aaserud, who farmed near Hannaford. He attended various elementary schools in the Hannaford area until his family moved to Traill County. Martin attended Mayville High School and graduated in 1946. He worked at home and for area farmers.

During the Korean Conflict, he was drafted into the Army infantry in January 1951. His unit served most of a year under combat conditions until being discharged in November 1952.

He worked in road and concrete construction until he enrolled at State School of Science at Wahpeton in auto mechanics. He worked in Forsyth, Mt. until the death of his father in 1956. At this time, he resumed farming and also worked at the Ford Garage in Mayville.

In 1967, he moved to Fargo and was a house parent at Svee Home for 5 1/2 years.

Martin married Joyce Danielson in Moorhead, MN on August 15, 1971. He started his own construction business in the Fargo-Moorhead area, an occupation he enjoyed, and made many new friends through his work. He continued working in carpentry and construction until this summer.

In recent years he has enjoyed renewing ties with his old buddies at Army reunions in Nebraska and Pennsylvania. He has enthusiastically attended the Rollag Threshing Reunions and done volunteer work at Bonanzaville. He was a member of the Sons of Norway and enjoyed attending their suppers, especially the lutefisk and lefse.

Martin is survived by 5 step-children: Cheryl (Dale) Frazier, Sioux Falls, SD; Glenda (Dennis) Fobes-Ziemer, Reile's Acres, ND; Randy (Linda) Danielson, North Branch, MN; Kevin "Buddy" (Elizabeth) Danielson, Fargo, ND; and Steven (Paula) Danielson, Kindred, ND. The love between them is as great as it could have been if they were his own. He is also survived by four sisters: Edna Erickson, Langdon, ND; Agnes (Orville) Kalvik, Hannaford, ND; Gladys (John) Aasen, Grand Forks, ND; and Marie Brauer, Reseda, CA; one brother: Clarence (Karen) Aaserud, Edgewood, WA; two sisters-in-law: Martha Aaserud, Las Vegas, NV; and Marlene Aaserud, Fort Wayne, IN, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
