Dr. William Page Meredith, 79-year-old physician who practiced medicine in Del Rio for 37 years, died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday in the Nix Hospital in San Antonio, where he had been under treatment for two weeks. Funeral services will be held in San Antonio at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Roy Ackers Chapel. The Rev. Joe Walts, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Del Rio, and the Rev. Marion Kirchner will be officiating. Dr. Meredith came to Del Rio in 1926 and practiced medicine here until his retirement in 1963.


He was born Jan. 30, 1894, in Bowie County, near Texarkana. He was the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Elijah Day Meredith. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1917 and entered military service as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps May 31, 1918. In World War I, he served in France and was separated from the military service June 10, 1919. He served his internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston. Dr. Meredith practiced general medicine in Willis, Texas, and in Pecos, Texas, before coming to Del Rio. While in Willis he married Miss Dalkeith Watson Dec. 11, 1920, in Willis. The couple marked their 50th wedding anniversary in Del Rio in December, 1970, coming from San Antonio for the occasion.


In 1922 Dr. Meredith, Mrs. Meredith and their daughter, Anna Jo left Pecos for Africa where he served as a medical missionary for three years. A son, W.P. Meredith, Jr. was born in Africa. The family returned to the United States in 1925 and moved to Del Rio in 1926. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, an ordained deacon and was active in church affairs during his residence in Del Rio. He was a Mason, a member of the Del Rio Lions Club, belonged to the Nine-County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Society, the American Medical Association, Bexar Medical Society, the Retired Ministers Association and the Del Rio Ex-Students of the University of Texas.


Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Dalkeith Meredith of San Antonio; a daughter, Mrs. R.E. Shirtum of San Antonio; a son, Dr. W.P. Meredith, Jr., Del Rio dentist; grandchildren, Page, Joe, Linda Keith and Wayne Shirtum; Billy Meredith, Mrs. Don McKenzie, Gerald and Sterling Meredith; five great-grandchildren.


His mother was Josephine Rebekah McMickle June 18, 1851-Jan 30, 1920
