Dame Maria Turner Furley, RRC., was born about 1845 and she died on 11th February, 1940, when living at 13 Lathbury Road, Oxford. She is buried with her husband Sir John Furley, CH.CB.KO. St. J., in the Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford (Section J1, Grave No. 120). She married John Furley in November of 1874, and then she accompanied him and worked with him on his many commissions for the Red Cross and St.Johns Ambulance Society.
Maria Turner Baker was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Leeds (nee Turner) and George Baker, JP of Reigate, Surrey, England. In 1899, her husband was knighted and she became known as Lady Furley. In 1903, she was awarded the Royal Red Cross and was also awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal and League of Mercy Medal. She was a Lady of Justice of the Order of St.John of Jerusalem.
Maria and John Furley did not have any children. The descendants of John Furley's sister, Louisa Creery Drake (nee Furley), have kept their story alive and found the site of their joint grave in 2013.
On the northern face of the combined headstone are the following inscriptions noted and photographed by Alan Simpson, Memorial Inscription Co-ordinator for the Oxford Family History Society in 2013. Top step: "Maria Turner Furley". Middle Step: "Wife of John Furley at rest February 11, 1940". Bottom step: "My trust is in thy Mercy".
