Alfred's marriage is recorded in Ionia County, Michigan 1837-67: "Ward, Alfred W., 26, married Ada Jenkins, 18, both of Easton Township by Rev. Alfred Cornell, Jr. at the home of her sister, Jane Ann Jenkins and Jane's husband, R. M. Bishop.

Alfred and Ada likely married after the death of Ada's father, David Jenkins, in July 1848. Witnesses were R. M. Bishop and W. Ward. The 1850 Federal Census of Easton Township, Ionia County, Michigan lists Alfred W. Ward and Ada (age 18, birthplace, Pennsylvania) as having no children.

Alfred was the eldest son of William W. Ward and Marcia J. from Easton, Ionia, Michigan. William was a shoemaker from Vermont and Marcia J. was from the state of New York.

It is unknown how the marriage of Alfred and Ada ended, however, Ada Jenkins Ward married William W. Sterling at the age of 22 years, having previously been married to Alfred.

Ada is buried with both husbands in the Sterling family grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. Alfred is one of the five individuals buried together in the Sterling family grave: Section 4, Grave 310:

1. William W. Sterling 1813-1881

2. Sarah B. - HIS (first) WIFE 1822-1854

3. Adah - HIS (second) WIFE 1832-1906

4. Willie - HIS SON 1863-1864

5. Alfred Ward -1868 (Alfred's date of birth is likely inaccurate on the headstone).
