The father of William Keeney, Michael Keeney Sr. was born March 22, 1767. Michael Keeney is the son of Peter Keeney, and died before 1838. Michael Keeney was the first generation arriving in St. Charles County, Missouri, prior to 1817 and settled in the area between 1826 and 1831.

It is believed Michael had outlived three wives. His first marriage was to Susannah Rawls on May 14, 1790, in Lincoln County, Kentucky. From 1774 to 1783 this area of central Kentucky, which includes Boonesborough and Harrodsburg, repeatedly defended its first white settlements against Indian attack. Another wife was Elizabeth Seyourner. Their marriage date is uncertain, but it is possible Elizabeth was the mother of William Keeney, who was born in 1809 and married in 1840 to Roanna Backues.

Michael Sr.'s son William and his young wife Roanna (Backus) Keeney left St. Charles County, Missouri and came to a valley straddling the Maries/Osage county line just west of Summerfield, Missouri.

On the Maries side they dug a well, built a makeshift house and began construction on a log home that still stands today but is used as a hay barn. It is one of the oldest structures in Maries County. Found nearby to the farmstead is Keeney Crossing and Keeney Ridge, the locations of which are still common knowledge of Summerfield area residents.

1. William and Roanna had seven known children:
Isaac Keeney (1841-1925)
2. Janetta "Nettie" (b.1848)
3. William Jr. (b.1850)
4. Jonathan (b.1853)
5. Sarah (b.1855)
6. Lucinda (b.1856)
7. Susan "Harriet" (b.1859)

Exact date of death unknown due to gravestone degradation. The current stone is a replacement, erected in 1994.
