Mary Stauffer Skold, 99, was welcomed into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 6, 2023, after passing peacefully in her sleep at Country Meadows Retirement Home.

Loving wife of the late Robert E. Skold, she is survived by her children Robert Skold, Jr. (Elsie) of Denver, CO and Salome Prickett (Craig) of Yardley, PA, her grandchildren, Kathleen Skold of Denver, CO, Laura Sangha (Anoop) of Media, PA, John Prickett (Jessie) of Glen Mills, PA, Noah Prickett of Jacksonville, FL, Racquel Stucky (Brad) of Garden City, KS, Simon Skold of Las Vegas, NV, Charles Skold of Portland, ME, Wesley-Adeyinka Skold (Sarah) of Los Angeles, CA, Samuel Skold of Greenville, SC, and her 11 great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her beloved son Walter Skold in 2018 and newborn daughter in 1958.

"Mary Salome", was born on November 28, 1923, in her family's home on North Queen Street, to Congressman S. Walter Stauffer, from Walkersville, MD, and Salome Elizabeth Baker Stauffer, of Wrightsville, PA. Mary enjoyed roller skating the alleys of downtown York with friends and exploring the Martin Memorial Library being built. Summers were spent in Ocean Grove, NJ at her family home open to friends and family visiting from York.

As a child, Mary attended York Collegiate Institute where she formed life-long friendships. She attended secondary school and junior college in Wellesley, MA, at Dana Hall Prep School and Pine Manor Junior College respectively. Mary finished her education in 1946 in Philadelphia when she graduated from The School of Occupational Therapy, which was affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. She began a career there working with inmates under lock and key at Valley Forge Hospital, while living on Delancey Street.

At 21 years old Mary drove to California to be a companion for a woman in Palm Desert. Her relatives and closest friends, Bob and Peaches Aufhammer living in Pasadena opened their home to her. Their residence became a second home for Mary Salome her entire life. A foundation was laid for her Faith in God to grow.

In June of 1953 she attended a garden wedding in York, of her friend, and met the enchanting best man, Robert "Bob" Skold. Just 8 months later, on January 16, they were married at The First Presbyterian Church of York, with a reception to follow at her family's home at 134 West Springettsbury Ave.

The newlyweds moved to New Jersey (Brielle, Red Bank and then Rumson) to begin their life together. Bob commuted to work as a Mortgage Loan Investment Officer at Mutual Benefit Life Insurance in Newark, while they welcomed their children, Robert Jr., Salome and Walter.

In 1958, within two weeks of each other, Mary suffered the unexpected losses of her mother and a daughter at birth.

In 1961 Bob's foresight brought the family back to York where Mary, a businesswoman ahead of her time, became co-owner of the family-run company, the J.E. Baker Company.

Mary was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in York. She was a great admirer of our nation's history, enjoying membership in the following patriotic societies: the National Society Colonial Dames of America, the Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century, The Huguenot Society of Maryland, the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the USA, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

As a D.A.R. member she held office as both Secretary and Treasurer, and was the National Registrar of Charlemagne for three years. Mary also held several board memberships, including The Children's Home of York, York Foundation, York Benevolent Society, Easter Seal Society of York, York College Women's Auxiliary, and at Ann's Choice Retirement Community in Warminster, Pa., where she lived from 2009-2020, served three years on the Protestant Council.

Throughout her life, Mary and Bob loved traveling, especially to Switzerland in January, where Swiss food, train travel, and watching the wood carvers in tiny villages excited her. Involvement in Ocean Grove continued through their historical preservation efforts which resulted in the formation of the Historical Society of Ocean Grove and the Centennial Cottage.

The most noteworthy aspect of Mary's life was her dedication to the "Great Commission" stated in Matthew 28:19-20. She supported over 25 missionaries and organizations that shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world.

Mary expressed the joy she had in life through flower arranging and gardening. Small bouquets of flowers, or as she called them "God's Daily Blessings", were always found inside her homes, and shared with her friends.

Mary's family was also a great joy to her, and she passed on her love of puzzles, root beer floats, Easter egg dyeing, the Eastern Market, Fitzkee's Candy, great York County food (especially the peaches!), and most importantly, her wisdom and laughter.

A lifelong motto of Mary's was, "If you don't change, you don't grow." At 97 years old, she took her own advice and after 12 years living near her daughter in Bucks County, chose to return to York. Her final two years were spent at Country Meadows where she enjoyed the enrichment of old friends, new treasured friends, and fabulous care from the staff. The Joy of the Lord was truly her strength.
