Horatio Nelson Burroughs was the son of John and Mary Howell Burroughs. He married first, 21 Jul 1842 St. Philips Episcopal Ch., Philadelphia Ellen Douglas Mitchell, daughter of samuel Augustus Mitchell and Rhoda Ann Fuller. They had children Mary Elena, Annie, Joseph Howell, and Ellen Douglas. After his first wife died in Feb 1853, he married her sister Caroline Mitchell on 20 Jul 1854 in Philadelphia. They had one son Henry Augustus.
