John Foster was the son of Scottish Immigrants that settled in Ohio. John Foster was married to a Mary Harshbarger August 23rd, 1899. Was farmer and trucker by trade. Had about 8 kids total, I believe, 4 never made it to their teens. Anna Sarah died at 9 1/2, three boys died as infants, buried by their sister, they were buried unnamed, so may have died shortly after childbirth. Had a son, John Norris Foster, and daughter, his daughter Leah Foster was my mother's mother, or my grandma. Never knew or met Leah, she died in a car accident when my mom was 16, in 1936. Leah was married to David Whitacre, he died in a Sanitarium in Indiana in 1943 of Syphillis. They had 5 kids, in order: Patrice Whitacre who died in 1941, with her fiance' in a motorcycle accident. She was only 24. Devon Whitacre who was a lifelong farmer, married to Bertie, had one son, Kent, died in the 90's in a nursing home, had Ahlzeimers Disease, his wife died a year later in the same nursing home, had a brain tumor. Devon had took over the family farm from his sister, sold it to some amish people, and bought his own farm. The third sibling was my mom, Roma Clayman left for Chicago with her new husband J.C. Moyers at the age of 19 in 1940. They had 3 kids, Diane, Earl, and Joe, were married 7 years, she divorced him, he was an alcoholic, he never remarried. He was in his 70's when he died in a Florida Nursing Home, in the 70's, from alcohol poisening. My mother married Jack Clayman of Chicago in 1950 and had three kids by him, me (Bonnie) Knapp, Cliff Clayman, Duane Clayman. They were married 40 years when my dad died of leukemia in 1990. My mom died in 2002, complications of a stroke and Parkinson's Disease. The 4th sibling of the Whitacre clan was Wanda (Whitacre) Shauver, married to Jim Shauver. They had three kids, Kathy, Steve, Keith. Jim died in the early 80's of Emphazema, a few years later Wanda died of Colon Cancer. The last and youngest was Lee Whitacre, died of pneumonia in 1990, a few months after he was pall bearer at my dad's funeral. He was married to Barbara, they had three kids, Linda, Jackie, and Rita. John Foster was widowed in 1934, didn't remarry, After he was widowed, when he was about 68, no prior police record, he took in a young girl to keep house for him and raped her supposedly, with no criminal background, first offense, pleaded guilty, no trial, was sentenced to the Indiana State Prison for 10 years in Michigan City. He was about to be paroled after 3 years, disowned by family out of shame, he escaped and was found two months later in a farmers field by two hunters, near the prison. Supposedly committed suicide by strangulation, he was 71 at the time, in 1941. A bandana knotted around his neck. The death was questionable, as was the escape. He was a model prisoner and in poor health. Prison officials originately thought he wandered off the Work Farm in a disoriented state, he had been in frail health. Nor was there much effort to find him. No family member would claim him, he's buried at the Prison Cemetery. Family rumor for decades said he was found beheaded by a creek in that farmers field.
