Wales, age 20, enlisted in the Confederate States Army, earliest record, 2 July 1861 in Nicholsville, Scott County, Virginia. He was mustered as a Private in 2nd Company D, 21st Battalion Virginia Infantry which was then consolidated with Company D, 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry. He claimed by Company E, 48th Virginia Infantry where he served most of his career until the end of the war. He was captured at the Spotsylvania County House, Virginia on 12 May 1864, sent to Point Lookout, Maryland and then received at Elmira New York on 2 August 1864. He took the Oath of Allegiance at Elmira on 27 June 1865. He was described as follows: residence-Bristol, Tennessee; dark complexion, eyes and hair; 5 feet & 6 inches tall.

Son of John Braddox Peters (1803–1885) and Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Humbard (1814–1885).
