William F. Amis
Jan. 29, 1921-Sept. 12, 2011
Resident of Pleasanton
William Amis, a 60 yr resident of the Tri-Valley passed from this life on September 12, 2011 at Kaiser- Walnut Creek. He is survived by his wife Victoria Bingham Amis, his family Billie Jerry Reichle, Douglas Patricia Amis and his grandson Matthew Amis extended family Amanda Shannon Hartzer. He was a gentleman who held strong beliefs and values which he passed on to his children and grandson.
William Amis had several careers in his life. He joined the United States Air Force prior to World War II where he served in the Pacific theatre of operations. He was among the initial group of professionals to work with
computers now called Information Management. After many assignments he retired after twenty years of service settling in Pleasanton, California which would be his home for the rest of his life. He continued his work in
Information Technology throughout most of his professional life as MIS Director for the United Way(San Francisco) before moving to Mother's Cake and Cookies (Oakland) where he worked for 20 years until his second
retirement. His third act was as a Tax Preparer for HR Block which he did well into his 80's. In the early 60s he was actively involved in his community working on Pleasanton's first Master Plan laying out the road map to make Pleasanton "The City of Planned Progress" a reality. As a devout Christian he was a leader of the Presbyterian Church he was instrumental in the obtaining of HUD funding to develop Pleasanton first Senior Housing Project (Pleasanton Gardens) the first low income housing (Pleasanton Greens). Raising his family with his wife Victoria B. Amis, he was a leader in the local Boy Scouts and supporter of his children's activities and aspirations.
The birth of his grandson Matthew marked an important event for Bill. It reenergized him as he dove into being Grandpa. His love and support of Matthew was unconditional and complete. From his birth until the end, Matthew was a center of my Dad's focus and life. No conversation happened that did not include discussions on what was going on with Matt.
His humility and gentle parenting created the environment where my sister and I could follow our own professional and personal lights to be the best person we could be. His quiet strength during periods of uncertainty and his fierce hold on his own core values are something that brought the sort of dignity and grace that we all would hope for. Over the past few years it
has been my joy to have weekly lunches with my Dad and, until he was unable, annual trips with my son to Hilton Head Island, SC to spend quality time with him and other family members. These will be some of the indelible memories with my Dad. I am sure that he is with his God and keeping an eye on all of us now. We will all miss him but are grateful for our time with him.
My dad will be laid to rest at Oakmont Memorial Park on Wednesday Sept. 21, 2011 at 2:00PM. We will be having a simple burial with military honors which my dad earned through 20 years of service to our country
