Mrs. Ruth Birch Carter, widown of the late Cassius Carter, and a prominent resident of this city for 56 years, died yesterday afternoon in Mercy hospiotal. At her bedside when death came were three of her five children - Marie Carter Sturges, Armistead Carter and Ruth Randolph Heuckendorff, all of San Diego. Capt. Grayson Birch Carter, USN, is onthe east, and one son, Cassius Carter, Jr., is dead.
Mrs. Carter was born in Plattsburg, Missouri in 1861, the daughter of Col. and Mrs. James H. Birch. She was married to Mr. Carter in Plattsburg in 1883 and they came to San Diego in 1887. she had resided for 40 years in the Carter residence of 2268 Second Ave.
For many years Mrs. Carter was active in Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and its rector, Canon C. Rankin Barnes, will officiate at funeral services, to be announced later by the Bradley-Woolman mortuary.
Until she became ill four months ago, Mrs. Carter's devotion to a wide circle of friends, as well as her family, was legendary in San Diego.
"To many of us she was 'Aunt Ruthie' or 'Mother Carter'", Mrs. Laurence Kiauber recalled yesterday. "From the time I arrived in San Diego in 1900 she remained on of my most valued friends, and it certainly could be said that her charm never left her."
Although 82 years old, Mrs. Carter continued to attract young friends, as well as to remain loyal to nolder ones, and her home was the scene of almost daily conferences for those who "just wanted to talk it over with Mother Carter", according to Mrs. Klauber.
Besides her children, Mrs. Carter is survived by two grandchildren --Cassius Carter III and Richard Randolph Carter, of San Diego. Cassius Carter, Sr. died in 1909, Cassius Carter, Jr., last July.
