Boy Drowned While Bathing

Charles Henry Bascomb, 15, son of Charles E. Bascomb of Maple street. was drowned while swimming in the Connecticut river near point Rock last Saturday afternoon. He and Clarence Hartwell were swimming and Bascomb waded to the island and attempted to swimming back again. He became exhausted, however, and went down. His companion realized his danger and attempted to assist him, but without avail. Albert Benjamin of Boston, an expert swimmer, who happen to be fishing near the spot heard cries for help and went to the rescue. After diving repeatedly he found the body and brought it to the surface and shore, but to late to save the boy's life although it is though by some that that if someone skilled in the act of resuscitating drowned persons had been there to work on the body the boy's life might possibly have been saved. In the absent of Medical Examiner Twitchell, Assistant Medical Examiner Wood of Northfield viewed the body. The boy's father and mother were spending the day in Shelburne Falls and arrived home on the late evening train. The funeral was held at the house Monday afternoon and was largely attended. There were many beautiful flowers.
