J. Harry Mowery, 95, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania died Wednesday in the Shippensburg Health Care Center.

Born September 27, 1909, in Lurgan Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late Norman G. and Dora M. Hollar Mowery.

He was retired from the former Domestic Pump and Manufacturing Co, where he was sales manager and later vice president. After retirement, he worked for Paul E. Lehman, Inc.

He was a 1927 graduate of Messiah Academy, Grantham, and a 1933 graduate of Shippensburg University, where he was a member of the SU President's Club and SU Alumni Association.

He was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher, former chairman of the Commission of Christian Education, and Scout Master of Troop 121. He was also a former district chairman of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a former mayor of Shippensburg, a former member of Borough Council, the Shippensburg Planning Commission, the Shippensburg Area School Board, and former chairman of the Historical and Architectural Review Board. He was past president of the Shippensburg Lions Club, a charter member of the Corn Festival Committee, and former vice president of the Shippensburg Historical Society. He was involved in the preservation of Dykeman Spring. He was a life member of the Vigilant Hose Company.

He was a member of Cumberland Valley Lodge 315 F&AM, Harrisburg Consistory, Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club, Valley Forest 145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, where he was former director of the Chanters, and the Sons of the American Revolution Conococheague Chapter.

He was the widower of Dorothy E. Miller Mowery, who died September 28, 1998.

He is survived by two sons, J. Ronald (husband of Judy) Mowery, Harrisburg, and Joseph C. (husband of Barbara) Mowery, York; one daughter, Dena M. (Mrs. Charles "Whitey") Martin, Shippensburg; one brother, Dr. Albert S. Mowery, Texas; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery.
