Mrs. Elizabeth Baer, 80, Hummelstown, Leaped Into Path of Car
HUMMELSTOWN, July 15. - Mrs. Elizabeth Baer, 80 years old, died shortly before noon as the result of injuries suffered last Thursday when struck by an automobile.
Mrs. Baer, who had lived all her life in this place, was injured while on her way to a store to select flowers for the funeral of her nephew, Jacob S. Shope, who died last Wednesday at his home here. At the time of the accident, she was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. C. N. Mumma, of Steelton.
The driver of the automobile desperately swerved his machine to the left in an effort to avoid striking the aged woman, who in her fright leaped in the same direction. She was knocked down and suffered severe injuries to the head.
On Sunday Dr. M. L. Nissley, the attending physician, said that Mrs. Baer had a fair chance for recovery. The favorable condition was maintained also on Monday. Unfavorable symptoms, however, developed on Tuesday, after which the patient sank into a semi-conscious condition.
Mrs. Baer, who was the widow of Samuel Baer, had been a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, of this place, since her early childhood.
Besides her sister, Mrs. C. N. Mumma, of Steelton, she is survived by a brother, Ernest M. Shope, of this place.
