Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez was born in Montevideo. He was the son of the owner of the Moulin Rouge, a popular local cabaret. As a young man, he studied architecture, but did not complete his schooling, but began composing in 1917. He enjoyed the night life of the cabarets. His very first known work was La Cumparsita, which has became one of the most recognizable tango pieces in the world. As a young man, he was too shy to play his own music. Over the years he composed a large yet worthy repertory of songs.
