John Winford Bundy was born in North Carolina, likely Sampson County, in 1863, the only known child of William Bundy and Zylphia J. Shepherd (b. ca. 1828). His father died when he was young, and his mother removed to Pleasant Grove in Johnston Co, NC, where she raised her son.

John was 28 years old when he married on April 15, 1891 to Lou Alice Strickland, the 15-year old daughter of David Neil Strickland and his wife, Mary Amanda Brock of Johnston County. The couple removed to Raleigh where John was a laborer, and later a house painter. They were parents to 5 known surviving children:

* Zylphia Amanda Bundy (1893-1942)
* Sarah Mildred Bundy (1896-1968)
* James Winford Bundy (1898-1935)
* William Vance Bundy (1901-1918)
* Alice Virginia Bundy (1908-1990)

John W. Bundy died from Pellagra at age 50 in 1913. His death certificate indicates he was buried in City Cemetery; however, his name does not appears on indexes for this cemetery, and I believe his stone and been buried or otherwise missing. I photographed his wife's stone, and as other family members are known to be buried here, and believe it is just an oversight that he does not appear on other surveys done of the cemetery..

His widow, Lou Alice, remained in Raleigh raising the children and sometime after 1921 she married again to the widower, Major Lawrence Jones of Jacksonville, Onslow County, NC, who who was widowed again when Lou Alice died in 1927.

As for his children, Zylphia married Jesse Earle Howell and was mother to at least 5 known children. Sarah "Mildred" married Frederick Clinton Jones of Raleigh; Alice Virginia Bundy married Howard C. (or Edward T.) Mosher and removed to Virginia; James Winford removed to Florida and married Mary "Mamie" McKinney, the widow of Charlie Lanier Wadsworth, then returned to Raleigh and died suddenly in 1935 at age 37. Son, William Vance Bundy, died suddenly at age 17 from a burst appendix.
