Death Claims Civic Leader – L. Newlands Ex-Chamber Head

Lawrence Creighton Newlands, Portland business and civic leader, died Sunday night in Oregon City hospital, following an extended illness.

Mr. Newlands, for the past 27 years head of Oregon Portland Cement company, was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, on March 6, 1877, and came to Portland as an employe of the cement company in 1915. His many activities included service as president of the Portland Chamber of Commerce in 1930, campaign director of the Community Chest drive in 1932, and director of the manufacturing section of the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1932-33. He also served as committee member of the national defense council of the national chamber.

A past director of the Oregon Golf association, Mr. Newlands was a former member of Oswego Lake Country club and a member of the Waverley Country club at the time of his death. He also held a membership in the Arlington club.

He acted as a committee chairman during the Portland American Legion convention, and was past president of the Pacific northwest railroad advisory board.

Mr. Newlands is survived by his widow, Mrs. Winewood Newlands, of Oswego, and three children, Mr. James A. Pike of Wells, B.C.; Mrs. C. Theodore Isaacson of Seattle, Wash., and Lieutenant Lawrence F. Newlands of Oswego. A brother, George F. Newlands, is in Portland, a second brother and three sisters are in Kingston, and another sister in New York.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 A.M. in the chapel of Riverview cemetery, with vault entombment. Finley & Son is in charge of arrangements.
