Valders, WI was settled in the 1850s by immigrants from the Valdres mountainous region of Norway. The largest town in Valdres is Fagernes, but many immigrants arriving in Wisconsin came from the valleys of Vestre Slidre and Øystre Slidre, ...
Valdres is a district of the county Oppland.
Vestre (West) Slidre and Øystre (East) Slidre came into existence in 1849 when the parish and municipality of Slidre was divided. The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Slidre farm (Old Norse: Slíðrar), since the first church was built here. The name is probably derived from slíðr which means "sheath", referring to a long depression near the church.
