Col. William Vincent McGuinness, Jr. (USA Retired), 75, of Avon, husband of Marjorie (Cox) McGuinness died Saturday, (July 3, 1999) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford. He was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1924 in New York City, NY, grew up in Flushing, NY, and was the eldest surviving son of the late William Vincent and Frances Genevieve (McGrane) McGuinness. He became an eagle scout and graduated in 1942 from Regis, an all-scholarship Jesuit high school in Manhattan. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1945, graduating in only three years. He received an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and was a licensed professional engineer in New York and Connecticut. In 1950, he married Marjorie Cecelia Cox of Bloomington, IL. He was a career officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 25 years. During his military career, he was stationed stateside and overseas in Japan, the Philippines, Okinawa, Germany, Turkey and Vietnam, where he commanded a 2,500-man US-Vietnamese force in 1967. He received the Legion of Merit and two Bronze Stars and retired at the rank of colonel in 1970. Following his military service, he was employed by the Center for the Environment and Man in Hartford, as an environmental consultant. He specialized in water resources and coastal zone management, and authored 40 published national, regional, and local studies, including significant work on the Long Island Sound. In 1982 he retired from the workplace but remained active in family, religious and community affairs. In March 1999, he completed over 20 years of genealogical research which culminated in the publication of eight volumes documenting the family lineage and irish heritage. He served six years for the Archdiocese of Hartford as vice-chairman to Archbishop Whelan on the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and six years on the Commission for Justice and Peace. At St. Ann's Church of Avon, he served as president of the Parish Council, a lector, and was instrumental along with others in planning for a new parish hall. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3272 of Avon and initiated and promoted the creation of a new Avon Veterans Memorial. He was the Avon HS Wrestling Team statistician from 1968-1993, and a member of the Triple Nine Society and Mensa. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie C. (Cox) McGuinness; two daughters, Anne T. Anderson of East Hartland, married to Peter Anderson; and Marie E. McGuinness of West Hartford; six sons, Robert L. of Glastonbury, married to Gerri (Souther); William V., III of Yonkers, NY, married to Susan (Schweizer); Kevin P. of Port Neches, TX; Brian F. of Foster City, CA; Steven M. of Waterbury, married to Sheila (Carmody); and Paul D. of Killingworth, married to Judi (Musco); eleven grandchildren, Tara, Lisa, Erin, Erik, Matthew, Brian, Lester, William, IV, Kristen, Jane and Colleen; brother, Donald F. McGuinness of New London, NH, married to Lorraine J. (Malanga); and sister Joan F. (McGuinness) married to Fred Cordova of San Marino, CA. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert V. and Robert J. McGuinness; and a son, Joseph E. McGuinness. His highest values were his Catholic faith, his wife and family, and the Nation's future. He was thankful for a full and fruitful life and hoped that the world would be better because of his contributions.
