Died on the 2d of this inst., Captain James Houston of Iredell County, NC, aged 72 years. He was a native of Ireland and emigrated to Philadelphia about the year 1770 and shortly afterwards settled in North Carolina. He was amongst the foremost of the citizens of this country who rendered actual services in the great national enterprise which tryed men's souls, of establishing the independence of the United States, until he became incapable of performing actual duties by a wound which he received in a hard fought battle at Ramsours, June 22, 1780; but his mind and the remaining powers of his body continued to exertion until the day of his death.

To the memory of Capt. James Houston, who departed this life August 2, 1819 in the 73 year of his age. A native of Ireland. Settled in this country some time previous to the revolutionary war. In and for which he exercised all his energies for the establishment of national Independence. He filled up the measure of his days, in the steady observation and practice of the Christian, moral, and social duties.
