WASHINGTON - Dean L. Armstrong, 86, of Lake Summerset, the father of Peoria area residents, died at 4:23 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 1, 1927, in Mattoon, Ill., to Mr. and Mrs. Walter and Mary (Linthicum) Armstrong. He lived in Lake Summerset for 19 years, coming here from Elk Grove Village, Ill., after residing there for 25 years. He married Mildred L. Jensen in Elgin, Ill., on Aug. 5, 1950.

He was employed as a teacher by Coleman Grade School in Elgin, Ill., where he taught third grade, and by Sandburg Junior High in Elmhurst, Ill., where he taught science and math until his retirement in 1992.

He also was a salesman for Harper Row Publishing. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy as an electrician's mate, working on Navy maintenance vessels the USS Tutuila and the USS Delta, based out of Shanghai, China.

He was a member of School Board District 300, Lake Summerset yacht club, and of the Carpentersville Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed sailing, camping, golf, model ship building, motorcycle riding, music, and playing the violin, oboe and guitar. Dean was a great father, one to teach strong values, love and respect, and a loving grandfather who would support his grandchildren any way he could. He also had a wonderful sense of humor.

He was a graduate of Northern Illinois University Teachers College and also received his Master's in Education from Northern Illinois University.

He is survived by his daughter, Beth Sherry of Washington, Ill.; son, Craig (Andrea) Armstrong of Gilberts, Ill.; daughters, Tami Armstrong of Lake Summerset, Ill., Janet (Doug) Gurss of Lewisburg, Kansas, and Elaine (Allan) Campbell of Mackinaw, Ill.; grandchildren, Kristen (Wes) Long, Jacob and Jared Armstrong, Amy (Adam) Bory, Brett (Hattie) Perkins, Rebecca (Craig) Nicholson, Jillian (Chris) Fogel, and Holly (Bill) Whitson; great-grandchildren, Bradley, Addison, Quynn, Lincoln, Greacen, Aiden, Reece, Heath, Ryan and Molly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; and brother, Jack.

Funeral ceremonies will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, in Wait Ross Allanson Funeral and Cremation Services, 51 Center St., Elgin. Burial will be in Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. A visitation will be Friday from 12 noon to service time at the funeral home. Arrangements are by McCorkle Funeral Home - Durand Chapel, 101 Main St., Durand.
