US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Pennsylvania's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 until 1987. Raised in the Philadelphia suburb of Springfield, he attained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lycoming College in Pennsylvania and was ordained a minister with the United Methodist Church as he received a degree in Master's Divinity from Drew University in New Jersey. From 1971 until his election to Congress, he served as Chaplain at Drexel University. Edgar won his Congressional seat as a result of the Watergate fallout and during his tenure, he spearheaded efforts to provide better care for Vietnam War veterans whom were suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, as a member of the Veteran's Affairs Committee. Additionally, he prioritized finding ways to cut wasteful spending within the government. Edgar was regarded by the residents of the district he represented as an honest public servant with integrity. After an unsuccessful bid for the US Senate seat held by Arlen Spector and his departure from Congress, Edgar went onto serve as president and CEO of the Common Cause group. From 1990 until 2000, he served as president of the Claremont School of Technology in California. He collapsed and died from an apparent heart attack after a workout on his treadmill.
