Harold E. ''Thornie'' Thorndyke, 79, of Sidney, formerly of El Paso, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Born May 19, 1920, in Cullom to Tom and Bertha Ferdinand Thorndyke, he married Helen Catherine Funk on April 12, 1941, in Cullom. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Shari (and Bill) Hensch of Sidney; two grandsons, Chad Hensch and Kyle Hensch, both of Sidney; and one great-granddaughter.

One brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

He and his wife owned and operated the Standard Oil Service Station and Thornie's Package Liquor Store in El Paso for many years.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Asian and Pacific Theaters. He received two Bronze Stars.

He was a past member of American Legion Post 59 and a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6026, both in El Paso.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Streator and Fraternal Order of Police Troopers Lodge 41. He was a past member of Rustic Car Club in Pontiac.

He was a past board member of El Paso Golf Course. He also was a former school bus driver for the El Paso-Secor School District.

He and his wife spent the winter months in Florida.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in El Paso.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
