TUPELO - D.D. "Dot" Leathers, 78, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at his home after a brief illness. He was born April 2, 1929, in Itawamba County to the late Ivy Arthur and Myrtle Ureath Cox Leathers. He had lived in Tupelo for more than 50 years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was active in Civitans and served in the U.S. Air Force. A retired educator, he served the students and teachers in the Tupelo Public Schools from 1953 to 1984 as a coach, teacher and principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels. He was a graduate of Itawamba Agricultural High School and president of the first graduating class at Itawamba Junior College in Fulton. He received his B.A. from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn., and his M.A. in education from Mississippi State University.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Tupelo with the Rev. Ray Rooney, the Rev. Dr. Roy H. Ryan and the Rev. Glyn Wiygul officiating. A private family committal service will follow at Lee Memorial Park. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Bourland Leathers of Tupelo; one daughter, Deborah Leathers Elmore of Davenport, Fla.; one son, William Leathers (Lynn) of Winter Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren, Nat Leathers (Bess), Matthew Leathers, Ben Elmore, Luke Leathers, Betsy Elmore and Bryan Elmore; two great-grandchildren, Hank Leathers and Will Leathers; two brothers, Leburn Leathers of Dorsey and Dane Leathers of Baldwyn; four sisters, Polly Nelson of Baldwyn, Quinn Pounds of Marietta, and Lynn Miller and Faye Vinson of Tupelo; 15 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Drewy Leathers, and a sister, Mary Nell Senter.

Pallbearers will be John Ray Beasley, Hudson Bryan, Dick McGraw, Troy Maxcy, Ken Stephens and Cecil Weeks.

Honorary pallbearers will be Winfred Hudson, Bill Rieves, Bubba Thompson and members of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to service time and immediately after the committal Wednesday at the Christian Life Center at Wesley United Methodist Church.
