…breathed last breath at Auditorium hotel in Chicago…painless…accompanied by daughter Mrs. M.G. BELL…son Edward B. Gridley…dilation of the heart, kidney trouble and uremic poisoning...widow of General Asahel Gridley…formerly Mary A. ENOS, was born in Onondaga Hollow, New York in 1818, being a member of one of the most prominent families of that state, at the age of 18 married to Mr. Gridley in Pittsburg…he had established himself in Illinois in 1813…newlyweds traveled Ohio river from Pittsburg to Cairo and by boat to Peoria, in wagons Peoria to Bloomington. 1836 she has settled in the city in which she has lived for sixty-four years…brought from Pittsburg, the first colored woman servant entered to the state and the first cane-seated chair and canary birth to enter Illinois…mother of eight children, but three of whom survive; Edward who manages the large estate left by his father, the two surviving daughters are Mrs. Mary G. Bell of the Oaks in this city and Julietta (Ernest)Schonrock, now living Paris, France, a sister, Mrs. Dr. Wm Cromwell, is a resident of Chicago…family lives in mansion on East Grove St, dividing their residence here with eastern cities and Europe.. life-long communicant of the Episcopal church…St. Matthew's parish...
Other children were:
Charles Skidmore, 1838-1848 (tetnus); Albert W, 1842-?; Edward, 1850-1850; George, 1860-'60; unnamed infants 1862, '64, and '68 (buried in Gridley plot) are children of Julietta Gridley and Fred Tater, married 1857
