William A. Woody
Dies At Age Of 89
At Son's Home Here

Funeral and burial services for William Alexander Woody, age 89, were held in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Mr. Woody died Monday morning at the home of a son, W.A. Woody, on the Scottsville Road after an illness of several weeks.
He was a native of Springtown, Tennessee.
Survivors include three sons, W.A. Woody of Franklin, Robert Woody of Reliance, Tennessee and Gus Woody of Hendersonville, North Carolina; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Smith of Birmingham, Alabama and Mrs. Vesta Joyner of Corbin, Kentucky; two sisters, Mrs. Bell Qualls of Parksville, Tennessee, Mrs. Ollie Stone, Reliance, Tennessee; two brothers, Jim Woody, Culman, Alabama and Grover Woody of Benton, Tennessee and several grandchildren. Dutch was the son of Mary Jane Jenkins and James Jasper Woody and his siblings were, Sarah (Blackwell), Adeline (Triplett), John Allen, Bell (Qualls), Grover, Charles Harrison, James Newton, Fate, Ollie Van (Stone), and Robert.

He married Allie Newton Dec 17, 1898, and they were parents of Gus, Robert Newton, Elsie (Smith), Vesta (Joyner) William Audie, Columbus E., James A. Jr. (died about a year old)

Dutch married 2nd Julia MCulley.

Dutch had owned and operated Woody's Grocery store in Reliance and in Chattanooga before his retirement. He was active in Polk County politics, having served as circuit court clerk and on the school board. He had represented Polk and Bradley Counties in the state legislature. He was a fifty year member of Reliance Lodge No. 636 F&AM, was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Shrines. He served as secretary for the lodge for several years.

Dutch was visiting his son, Audie, in Kentucky when he died, but was sent back home to Polk County for the memorial service at Hiwassee Union Baptist Church, and interment in Old Ocoee Cemetery.
