Mary Durkin was born as the only child of William Henry Durkin and Clara Oberlatz Durkin. She was raised in a home built by her father on Alabama Street in Bellingham. She was a member of the first graduating class of Bellingham High School. During WWII she worked as a secretary in Seattle. On Jun 30, 1945 she married B. Charles Hemminger. They had 5 children, Boyd, Sheila, Jim and twins Mary Jo and John. She loved music and became an accomplished organist later in her life. She passed away quietly in her home.
