Karen's Poem by Evelyn Flowers:
She's a woman with many varied interests; it's hard to tell which she likes best. But thinking it over, it has to be…Music, animals and quilting, these three. Keyboard she has mastered with ease, on the piano and organ, she has expertise. She has many musical instruments as toys, piano, bass clarinet, and flute she enjoys. Her love of animals is legendary—when needed by one, she does not tarry. To many an animal she has come to the rescue, Dogs, cats and birds, she's had more than a few. Just so she will have no regrets, when not preoccupied with music or pets, to her sewing machine she retreats with glee, to piece together bbeautiful material happily. All these thing she does love, while giving thanks to God above. She's weathered many a crisis in her life, but always has managed to survive. In doing so she has come to be an inspiration for us all to see. She has a wonderful help-mate who shares her life, forever together as husband and wife. Karen, you are a family treasure!
Evelyn was also a family treasure. She made fabulous quilts, often donating her work to community efforts such as Habitat for Humanity. This information was published in the Las Cruces Habitat newsletter, March 2008, following her death:
Remembering Evelyn Flowers
Pictured here is long time volunteer Evelyn Flowers as she presents a needlework plaque commemorating the dedication of a Habitat-built home to one of our partner owners. Over the years Evelyn prepared and presented 58 such plaques. In recognition of her many years of devoted service to Mesilla Valley Habitat the Board of Directors on December 19th unanimously passed the following resolution:
Whereas - Evelyn Flowers has shown continued devotion to the cause of providing affordable housing for the less fortunate in the Las Cruces area; and
Whereas - Evelyn Flowers has spent countless hours in the preparation of needlework homeowner plaques; and
Whereas - Evelyn Flowers has contributed materially through her service over the years to the efficient operation of office functions of Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity; and
Whereas - Evelyn Flowers is a thoroughly delightful person with whom to work because of her cooperative nature, ready wit and pleasing personality; therefore
Be It Resolved - Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity owes a debt of gratitude to Evelyn Flowers far beyond any ability to repay. Evelyn died February 14th at the age of 88. She will be long remembered.
