One of the United States' preeminent historians, graduated from Harvard in 1851; he spent 1863-1865 in the South during the Civil War in the service of the Freedmen's and Western Samitary Commission. He was professor of ancient languages at the Univ. of Wisconsin beginning in 1867, and later professor of history. He was a pioneer in teaching by the topical system of study and through examination of original sources. He was a prodigious writer; his works included "Slave Songs of the United States," six volumes of Latin texts, "Annals of Tacitus", and "Short History of the Roman People".
