Windham, CT – Edward B. Shurtleff, 92, of Willimantic, Connecticut, died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at St. Joseph's Living Center in Windham after a long illness. He was the longtime companion of the late Ruth Hahn, the husband of the late Lorda E. (Wiencek) Shurtleff and the former husband of the late Elinor Weaver. Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Charles E. and the late Lucy M. (Bourne) Shurtleff, he grew up in Fairhaven and was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, where he was the senior captain of the track team.

He lived in Fairhaven most of his early years. After retirement he lived on the west coast of Florida, and thirty-five years ago settled in Willimantic, CT. Mr. Shurtleff was a member of the First Congregational Church in Willimantic. After high school, Ed worked with his father running Shurtleff's Market on Shawmut Ave. in New Bedford. He later served in the U. S. Army from 1941-1945 in the European Theatre in England, France and Germany. Upon his return from the service, Mr. Shurtleff worked as a machinist at Aerovox retiring after twenty-four years of service. After retiring, Ed kept busy with various part-time jobs in Florida and Connecticut.

Mr. Shurtleff's lifelong passion was music and he loved to entertain, especially with his saxophone. He was an active part of the music therapy program at the St. Joseph's Living Center both prior to and during his time there. He was also a member of the VFW #1724, the American Legion Post #19, a Past Commander of the DAV, and a member of the Post #2 AM VETS, all in Connecticut. He was also a member of the Suncoast Mummers Band of Florida.

Mr. Shurtleff is survived by two daughters, Leslye Ribeiro and her husband Carl of Marion (MA) and Donna E. DeBalsi and her husband Robert of Fairhaven; three grandchildren, Mark C. Ribeiro of Easton and Kristin L. DeBalsi and Bethany J. DeBalsi, both of Fairhaven; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Shurtleff was the brother of the late Marion Shumway.
