son of Robert C. Osgood and Edith Fitch

He attended Stevens High School in Claremont, NH, and then attended Randles Preparatory School in Washington, DC. He received a Senatorial appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940 and graduated with the class of 1944 in June, 1943. During World War II he served aboard destroyers - the USS Gherardi in the North Atlantic, and then the USS Welles in the Pacific, participating in the Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Operations. Following the war he attended the Naval Intelligence School and then served as an instructor there. A series of assignments in intelligence followed, including the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Naval Security Group. He also served as First Fleet Intelligence Officer and as Officer-in-Charge of Naval Field Operational Intelligence Office.

Upon retirement in 1970 in Boca Raton, Florida, he became active in a wide range of activities and traveled extensively worldwide. He studied genealogy and his research was published in several family history books. He had a life long interest in and commitment to preservation of the environment and wilderness areas, and was active in the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, and Florida Trail Association. He was an avid hiker, canoeist, and outdoorsman. He was a life member of the Florida Trail Association and the Naval Academy Alumni Association.
