Moses was the son of James Coffey and Martha Tucker. Moses enlisted in Union Army during the Civil War. He served in the 19th Kentucky Infantry along with his two brothers, George A.C. and Francis Marion. In 1865 he married Margaret Katherine Goode. He and Kate were the parents of 13 children, nine daughters and four sons. He is buried next to his wife.

Moses was the postmaster in McKinley Kentucky. He went to Indianapolis, Indiana to assist his son, George Anderson whose family was ill with smallpox. It is believed that Moses contracted smallpox while there and did not survive the disease.
