Charles was born, married, and had his first two children in Nova Scotia. He ended up getting into a bar fight and accidentally killing a man, so he fled to the United States. He was eventually exonerated but never returned to Canada, fearing that it was a ploy to get him to return and arrest him. He married Annie around 1904 and they had at least six children:
Margaret Garnet, b.1905 in Nova Scotia
Mary Cecelia, b.1908 in Nova Scotia
Annie Ellen, b.1913 in Massachusetts
William Charles, b.1914 in Massachusetts
Eva Elizabeth, b.1915 in Massachusetts
Arthur Richard, b.1917 in Massachusetts
