The beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, James Christian Lamb III, born at “Rural Shades” in Wellford’s Wharf, Virginia on August 20, 1924, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2010 in Winston-Salem, NC. His dearly loved wife, Martha Lee McGinnis Lamb (called “Pat”), preceded him in death in 2002. He was the son of Renee Soulie Lamb and James Christian Lamb, Jr., both of whom worked and lived in Warsaw, Virginia for many years. His father was born at “Belleville” in Warsaw and his mother was born in Arcachon, France. They lived at “Belleville” before moving to “Rural Shades.”
Dr. Lamb was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. His college career was interrupted as he served in the U.S. Army in Okinawa in World War II. He then graduated from VMI, married Pat, and went on to earn two Master’s degrees and a Doctor of Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent over 30 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in the School of Public Health.
Together they had five children – Madeleine Carter Lamb, James Christian Lamb IV, Charles Dabney Lamb, Robert Sherwood Lamb, and William Brockenbrough Lamb. Those children gave them 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren
