BENTON HARBOR -- Ida Lee "Honey" Bowman, 106, of Benton Harbor, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, from her residence, while surrounded by family members.

Mama Honey's homegoing will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 22, at the Greater Faith Apostolic Church at 11 a.m., with family hour beginning at 10 a.m. The interment will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Robbins Brothers Funeral Home, Benton Harbor is in charge of arrangements.

Ida was born July 9, 1896, in Prattville, Ala., to the union of Joe and Ella Washington. Honey was baptized in Jesus' name and received the Holy Ghost in 1946 under the leadership of the late Elder John Wesley Hunter. She was the last surviving member of Elder Hunters' original church. Honey continued to worship and praise God at the Greater Faith Apostolic Church, under the leadership of her son, the late Bosie Bowman Jr.

Honey was the eldest of 13 children. She was a loving wife, mother of 11 children, grandmother of 73, great-grandmother of 137, and great-great-grandmother of 68. Ida married the late Eddie Walters and from that union one son was born. She later married the late Bosie Bowman Sr. and from that union 10 children were born.

Ida will be truly missed by her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memories four sons -- Albert Walters, Frank Bowman and Wylie (Evelyn) Bowman, all of Benton Harbor, and Stokes Bowman of Alabama; three daughters -- Lillie Isom of Benton Harbor, Bessie (Johnny) Isom of Flint, Mich., and Ida Campbell of Alabama; one brother, Quincy (Fannie Mae) Washington of St. Louis, Mo.
Ida was preceded in death by husbands, Eddie Walters and Bosie Bowman Sr.; three sons, Ray, Charles and Bosie Jr.; and a daughter, Annie James.

Honey loved to travel and was often found missing from her home, because she decided she needed to fly to another city or state to visit her family and many friends.

Honey returned to Benton Harbor in 1992 and resided with her daughter, Lillie Isom, along with her three special great-great-grandchildren, Ryan, whom she called "man," and Precious and Brianna, whom she called "lil ladies." Prior to coming to Benton Harbor, she lived in Alabama with her son, Stokes Bowman.

Because of her friendly nature, she never met a stranger. Her favorite questions to them were "Who are you?" "Do I know your people?" and "What church do you go to?" Ida enjoyed reading and being able to read. Her favorite book and scripture was the Bible (Exodus 3:10 respectively).

Her favorite song was "You Don't Know What the Lord Told Me." Also, "I am messed up, tied up, and tangled up in Jesus," was her favorite saying.
