Lula May Chumbley was born July 18, 1886 in Hickory Creek, Grundy County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Chumbley and Nancy Jane Embry. Between 1900 and 1907 she married Adam Campbell Bales. They had two sons, Harry Thomas Bales born January 18, 1907; Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa and died November 6, 1983 in Los Angeles, California and Paul Andrew Bales born December 23, 1909 also in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. He died July 5, 1988 in Napa, California. Between April 1910 and 1920, Lula and Adam divorced, Harry and Paul staying with their father, who remarried and moved the family to California. Between 1920 and 1925, Lula married a Mr. Beer and was divorced from him before 1930. On July 28, 1978 Lula passed away at 5:15 a.m. at Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 0 months and 10 days. Services were held Sunday, July 30, 1978 at the Johnson Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa. Burial in the Numa Cemetery with Rev. William Ballard officiating.
