Joseph Bagent was the son of William and Elizabeth Bagent of Loudoun County, Virginia. Born in Neersville in 1841 he married Mary A Mobberly there on 30 Jan 1868. Joseph served with the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting with Company A of the Loudoun Rangers on 02 Apr 1863. He was severly wounded on 14 Oct 1864 at the Battle of Adamstown (MD) and was mustered out on 30 May 1865. In 1870 Joseph is still living in Loudoun County but moves across the Potomac River to Washington County, Maryland sometime before 1890.

On April 1st, 1913 Joseph is struck by B&O Passenger Train No.2 in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland. He dies instantly from the accident, whcih happened around 5 o'clock that afternoon. His funeral services were held at the Sandy Hook Methodist Church.

Just four days after Joseph's death his brother, George Washington Bagent, suffered heart failure due to the shock of his brother's accident. George was buried in Ebenezer UMC Cemetery, just across the Potomac from Sandy Hook in Loudoun County, VA.
