OBITUARY: John McNutt was born November 18th, 1866, at Ottawa, Kansas, and departed this life August 2nd, 1942, being the age of 75 years, 8 months and 15 days.


He was married to Mary F. Bales, February 12th, 1888. Mr. and Mrs. McNutt pioneered into Old Day County in the year of 1903.


To this union was born one daughter and six [sic, seven] sons: Mrs. Zola Culp, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jesse McNutt, Hotchkiss, Colorado; Riley McNutt, Beaver, Oklahoma; Albert McNutt, Rogers, Arkansas; Alvie McNutt, Sandpoint, Idaho; Gordon McNutt, Dovecreek, Colorado; Grant McNutt, Los Angeles, California[; and Steven McNutt who died in infancy].


Mrs. Mary McNutt preceded him in death February 8th, 1911. On December 10th, 1929, he was married to Mrs. Florence Hopper. He leaves to mourn his passing the widow, his seven children, 31 grand-children, 14 great-grand-children; two brothers, Harem McNutt of Yates Center, Kansas, and W. B. McNutt of Portland, Indiana; a host of other relatives and many friends.


Funeral rites were conducted by Rev. J. M. Banther Baptist pastor at the Christian Church, August 5th at 4:00 p. m. and interment made in the DeBolt cemetery.

John C. McNutt was the son of Andrew McNutt (1837–1913) and Melissa Clarissa (Fairchild) McNutt (1836–1898).


He married on February 12, 1888 in Crescent Hill (Adrian), Bates County, Missouri to Mary Frances Bales, daughter of William Riley Bales (1826–1877) and his second wife Mary Jane (Towell) Bales (1836–1920). He and Mary Frances had eight children: Jesse, Riley, Albert, and Zola born in Missouri; and Alva, Gordon, Grant, and Steven born in Oklahoma.


After his first wife's death, he married on December 10, 1929, in Oklahoma to Bertha Ann "Florence" (Smith) McCulloch Hopper, her third marriage, daughter of James Chenoweth Smith and Ferbia Adaline (Cooper) Smith. No children.
